Why do you need this?

Most of you will read this for practical reasons. As prospective students, you want to decide
if Sociology is right for you. As current students in NUS Sociology, you want to decide which
Sociology modules are right for you. As students of Sociology outside NUS, you want to
know what you are missing from your own institution’s offerings.

You will find here a starter pack, comprising lists of selected readings spanning the modules
I have personally taken. I do not aim to provide a comprehensive, up-to-date list; I believe
the NUS Sociology lecturers can do that very well for themselves. Rather, this curation is meant to
pique your curiosity and propel your education in Sociology and Anthropology. It may also
inform your academic decisions, alongside whatever resource you can locate before CORS
bidding comes round.

You may also find value in referring to these lists in the course of your modules, whether to
find web links or to build logical links with readings from other modules. It does help to have
a summary of materials readily accessible in one place. Do note that I’m not giving full
citations, because they provide unnecessary clutter and intimidate casual readers. So if you
are citing for your essays, head to Google Scholar to find the citations in APA, etc.

I may write new module reviews and blog posts from time to time. The reviews will include
anecdotes from my experience, whether they pertain to teachers, peers, or my own
thoughts. These may reveal more about the module or lecturing style for the module
shoppers among you, since readings form only one part of a successful module. The blog
posts, if I decide to write them, will pertain to the ideas in specific readings.

of creation, from essays to podcasts. Not spam, I promise; I don’t have the energy to waste
on boring pursuits. And I know you don’t, either.

It is in this extended acquaintance that I hope I can be of most service to you.

Hi, my name is Eugene. I am a Sociology graduate from the National University of Singapore. I seek to help you create freedom in everyday life, with empathy and the sociological imagination.
