SG Music: Jude Young – Young EP [Lyrics/Videos]

I have heard Jude Young play with music since his Secondary School days–when he was still Yu Quan. Full of passion, he picked up the guitar and emanated vibes reminiscent of Jason Mraz across the school. Though still naive in the belief that talent is proportionate to popularity–and thus global artists are always superior to Singaporean artists–I was satiated by Jude every time. I always felt I was listening to a future star.

Since graduation, he has really gone places with his music. In 2012, he homemade 4-track The Caterpillar Sandwich EP. He gradually caught the eye of studio producers, yielding Yummy Butterflies, a shy serenade capturing the flutters of a high school courtship. Following more covers, he debuts as Jude Young with Pretty, another Valentine’s tune. Despite the thematic continuity, it marked the start of a transition.

That same year, he presented his soaring National Day tribute Waves of Tomorrow. In 2016, he released this studio EP, Young. The title track is an anthem for youth, both for Jude and the rest of us. Even Summer was an instant favourite and still gives me goosebumps every time. Hour took longer to grow on me, but I now adore its complexity and the ending melody. Cold and One do not come with MVs, but prove further that Jude has really evolved musically.

Whether Yu Quan or Jude Young, as artist or person, I am a fan. I trust that he will find it in himself to create the best he can be. Rock on, Jude!

Track 1: Young [Lyrics by Jude Young]

Going back in time
Taking a walk with the memories I’ve left behind
I’m trying to cross the line
Crossing the line to see what I can find

Take it in
See how far we’ve come
Breathe it in
Remember when we were so young

We are, we are
The ones who will never die
We are, we are
The ones who will fight the night
So get up, up to the new day
We’re going hard, what do you say
We are, we are
Young

Okay, I don’t mind
Making mistakes and miscalculations, oh
Don’t apologise, don’t you compromise
Soon you’ll realise

Take it in
See how far we’ve come
Breathe it in
Remember when we were so young

We are, we are
The ones who will never die
We are, we are
The ones who will fight the night
So get up, up to the new day
We’re going hard, what do you say
We are, we are
Young
Young

We are, we are
The ones who will never die
We are, we are
The ones who will fight the night
We are, we are
The ones who will never die
We are, we are
The ones who will fight the night

So get up, up to the new day
We’re going hard, what do you say
We are, we are
Young
Young

Track 2: Even Summer [Lyrics by Jude Young]

[yotuwp type=”videos” id=”PSZwxIsgPW4″ ]

Sitting wide awake and praying
Wishing all this time would just pass me by and I’m
Pacing up and down the alley
Having conversations in my mind

With you, oh you’re so far away but
All I think about is you, my heart is still with you

Choking up the voice inside me
I’m moving on but it feels like just a lie that I
Tell myself, oh am I sorry
For doing my best to love you, oh I’ll try

For you, oh you’re so far away, I
Will keep my crying eyes from you, my heart is still with you

And I think we still have a chance
Even summer will come back, will come back
And I will take time to find myself
Until then I will hold back, I’ll hold back, yeah, oh

For you, oh you’re so far away but
All I think about is you, my heart is still with you

(Woah oh woah
Oh no woah oh
Oh no woah oh no no
Oh no woah oh
Oh no woah oh no no)

For you, oh you’re so far away, I
Will keep my crying eyes from you, my heart is still with you

And I think we still have a chance
Even summer will come back, will come back
And I will take time to find myself
Until then I will hold back, I’ll hold back, yeah, oh

And I think we still have a chance
Even summer will come back, will come back
And I will take time to find myself
Until then I will hold back, I’ll hold back, yeah, oh

For you, oh you’re so far away but
All I think about is you, my heart is still with you

Track 3: Hour [Lyrics by Jude Young]

[yotuwp type=”videos” id=”wDNoBmV09PY” ]

Smoking a cigarette in this bone-cold weather
Painting images in the air between us
Turning the hourglass, watching it drop so fast
Checking ideas with our eyes

The ground falls far below me tonight
I got the window seat to watch this goodbye
I am falling back in time
If only I could lose this hour, forever

I hate to leave it all behind
But I’ll be waking up an hour after you
I’ll have to leave you on my mind
It’s just 3,000 miles of chasing endless and
If I could run along with the earth, I would be running till I’m all out of love
I probably won’t make it there first, but I’ll be there for you when push comes to shove
I would go back in time
But if it helps me move forward, I’m always an hour behind ya

Writing a melody in this skin-warm weather
Pulling anticipation in the air between us

The ground falls far below me tonight
I got the window seat to watch this goodbye
I am falling back in time
If only I could lose an hour, lose this hour, forever

I hate to leave it all behind
But I’ll be waking up an hour after you
I’ll have to leave you on my mind
It’s just 3,000 miles of chasing endless

If I could run along with the earth, I would be running till I’m all out of love
I probably won’t make it there first, but I’ll be there for you when push comes to shove
I would go back in time
But if it helps me move forward, I’m always an hour behind

I hate to leave it all behind
But I’ll be waking up an hour after you
I’ll have to leave you on my mind
It’s just 3,000 miles of chasing endless and
If I could run along with the earth, I would be running till I’m all out of love
I probably won’t make it there first, but I’ll be there for you when push comes to shove
I would go back in time
But if it helps me move forward, I’m always an hour behind

Track 4: Cold [Lyrics by Jude Young]

___ comes and locked the door
Finger stains across the window pane it’s not the same
You find your gaze upon the walls
Breathing in the ghost of loneliness and promises
How do I stay when nothing’s coming back at all
All that’s left is the fall

You said the heart will change
You said please not today
Please not today
You said I’m not to blame
You said I’ll be okay
Still I’m stuck here feeling cold
Stuck here feeling cold

Close my eyes until the flood
It didn’t rain the sounds of chasing trains it’s not the same anymore
Distant days I can’t recall
Memories they stay in broken frames and foreign names
How do I stay when nothing’s coming back at all
All that’s left is the fall, the fall

You said the heart will change
You said please not today
Please not today
You said I’m not to blame
You said I’ll be okay
Still I’m stuck here feeling cold
Stuck here feeling cold

Woah woah~ ooh~
Woah woah~ ooh~

You said the heart will change
You said please not today
Please not today
You said I’m not to blame
You said I’ll be okay
Still I’m stuck here feeling cold
Cold~
